Moving Hosts Re: Domains and Email

Posted: March 4, 2010 | by Kristine | Filed under: Web Design/Internet

A quick Public Service Announcement. When moving hosts you may often have to switch your name servers to the new host. The information for this is usually in a welcome letter and your new host will happily help you out with making the move. Unfortunately there is a step that many people don’t think about, email.

When you switch to a new host your email switches as well but it does not automatically set up. You’ll need to log into your new hosting control panel (cpanel in many cases) and set up your email address again.

If you are moving hosts its probably a good idea to have a backup email address handy and give it to anyone who may be working on your site, ie: web designer. This way if there is a glitch in your move you can still contact each other and the process may go faster and smoother. This especially helps if your domain is taking a bit to propagate over to the new host which can take 24-72 hours.

Adobe’s Kuler Color Picker

Posted: March 1, 2010 | by Kristine | Filed under: Web Design/Internet, Web Reviews

adobe kuler I’ve blogged before about inspiration and colors when I talked about Colour Lovers. Web Savvy Mama LOVES colors! I’m back to talk about another online gem I found that my fellow color loving mamas will love!

Adobe has an online color picker called Kuler. When I first saw it I though, “Oh, another color picker. What’s the bog deal?” Then I started playing around with it! The color picker part is like most you find online, the feature I liked the most was the “create from image” option. I popped a picture of my daughter in and ta-da! Color palette! It lets you select a mood which will change the colors it grabs from the picture. How cool is that?!

As someone who takes inspiration for web design from every day objects I can see this handy little site getting a lot of use. Have a favorite printed skirt? Snap a picture and ta-da, instant color palette! Go play and let me know what you think!

Web Design Terms

Posted: August 16, 2009 | by Kristine | Filed under: Web Design/Internet

Since I work in web design everyday, there are many terms that are part of my common vocabulary that not everyone may be familiar with when related to web design. I can forget this when explaining a feature to a client and they may be left scratching their head thinking “Huh?!” I want all my clients to feel comfortable talking about the design process and understand what makes up their specific site.

I’m going to outline some of the basic terms and concepts use in web design that my clients will experience when talking to me about their project. I have included screenshots for some of these as well. To view a larger version of this template you can click here. The example used is a ready made template that is currently for sale. Read More…

Web Design Rules According to WSM

Posted: July 12, 2009 | by Kristine | Filed under: Web Design/Internet

I’ve been designing web sites for small businesses and work at home moms for nearly 5 years, during that time I’ve seen a lot of bad web site designs. I created a list of my own Do’s and Don’t s when it comes to web design. This is not a complete list, but one that I try to follow when I’m creating sites for clients. If you’re unsure about how to go about creating an effective web site, read on to get some ideas about what can make or break your web site.

Don’t: Use FrontPage or other WSYING editors, or graphical editors. These editors usually create messy HTML code that is not as easily read by all web browsers. They are also more likely to create both visible errors and other errors that may prevent your visitors from navigating your site effectively.
Do: Use clean HTML and CSS to design in a way that is W3C compatible. Using clean coding ensures that your site is usable by more users and accessible by those with disabilities as well. Dreamweaver or hand coding are your best options. Clean coding techniques also promote great SEO results! Read More…
