Your Desktop Revisited

Posted: April 23, 2010 | by Kristine | Filed under: All Things Web

Ever get tired of looking at unorganized icons? Icons on the desktop are one of my biggest pet peeves. Yet, if you are like me you have a bunch there simply because its the easiest place to keep your current projects and most used files. This doesn’t mean your desktop has to look a mess or be totally boring.

While browsing the web I stumbled across a totally fun wallpaper idea, your desktop revisited. (see original find here) Who says your desktop has to be your standard background? Why can’t it help you organize your files too? When searching the web I found a couple variations on this idea but none f them were “me”. So I opened up Pixelmator and started grabbing furniture for my virtual office. What I came up with was a fun way to arrange my files and drives on my desktop.

Why stop there? Apple computers have a dashboard with some fun features, what if I could work those in too? So I found a bit of code that I could input into my iMac terminal to enable my dashboard widgets to stay live when my dashboard is closed. Now I have sticky notes, a calendar and weather always available! (source for detaching widgets) Sorry Windows users, you’ll have to figure that one out on your own. If you only have one monitor you may want to limit this though, the widgets do stay top layer and could get in your way. I have 2 monitors so I have all my folders, widgets and support applications on my second monitor and use my main one as my workspace.
