Moving Hosts Re: Domains and Email

Posted: March 4, 2010 | by Kristine | Filed under: All Things Web

A quick Public Service Announcement. When moving hosts you may often have to switch your name servers to the new host. The information for this is usually in a welcome letter and your new host will happily help you out with making the move. Unfortunately there is a step that many people don’t think about, email.

When you switch to a new host your email switches as well but it does not automatically set up. You’ll need to log into your new hosting control panel (cpanel in many cases) and set up your email address again.

If you are moving hosts its probably a good idea to have a backup email address handy and give it to anyone who may be working on your site, ie: web designer. This way if there is a glitch in your move you can still contact each other and the process may go faster and smoother. This especially helps if your domain is taking a bit to propagate over to the new host which can take 24-72 hours.
